The Youth Commission
currently has a list
of six initiatives:
1. Secure Grants
2. Youth Activities
3. Volunteer Recruitment
4. Community Outreach
5. Web Update and Revision
6. beFree Projects
The Secure Grants initiative
is intended to drive an effort
to write a grant proposal and
apply for a community grant from
the federal Drug Free
Communities (DFC) grant program.
The program will provide
$125,000 in funding for up to 10
years. The recipient community
must provide matching funds or
in kind services.
Community Outreach will
include the MLK Day of Giving
Back activities. The beFree
program, a local grant project,
is intended to help youth
experience life without drugs
and alcohol. Youth activities
will identify events and venues
that can help young people
identify safe and entertaining
places and programs outside
normal school hours.
Once the broad six item
framework gets final approval,
the 18 member Commission will
begin to fill in the items with
the appropriate plans,
procedures and volunteer names.
Jean Vazza, recently
appointed Youth Services
Coordinator, also attended the
meeting. Vazza presented a list
of her initiatives and
accomplishments during the last
three months. The commission
asked Vazza to keep them current
with her activities,
particularly with the grant
application process. Vazza is
responsible for writing and
submitting the DFC grant as part
of the commission’s six item
list of goals and initiatives.
Vazza plans to recruit a
professional grant writer for
the grant project.
Vazza is also actively
recruiting parent volunteers to
help support Hopkinton youth. In
a document circulated at the
meeting, she described some of
the activities she’s trying to
initiate with the help of
volunteers. In addition to
Middle and High School events,
there are community initiatives
that will require organizers,
chaperones, and publicity help.

the volunteer opportunities or
