TITLE:                                   Police Dispatcher

TYPE OF POSITION:           Non-Benefit Eligible Part Time 19 hours per week $14.38 per hour

LOCATION:                          Hopkinton, Massachusetts

The Town of Hopkinton (pop. 15,000) seeks qualified candidates for the position of PT Dispatcher.

Under the close supervision of the Chief of Police, the Dispatch Supervisor, a Sergeant, a Lieutenant, and/or the Officer in Charge the employee performs responsible communication and clerical work, operating a communications desk, dispatching public safety vehicles, maintaining a log of messages received and sent.

DUTIES

  1. Answers all incoming calls, both emergency and business related, transfers callers appropriately and provides answers to questions raised.
  2. Transmits service calls via radio transmitter to mobile units and provides all critical and specific information.
  3. Keeps abreast of state and local public safety related laws and regulations, and other pertinent information in order to be of assistance to the public in rendering proper referrals.
  4. Checks communication equipment intermittently, including alarm panels, radios, vocal alarm, telephones and any other related equipment.
  5. Reports and records movement of personnel (i.e. responding, out of service, etc.)
  6. Participates in training, developing competency in all phases of dispatching, including any computer aided dispatch systems.
  7. Operates all of the office equipment listed herein, and performs other related duties of the position, and or as required by the Chief of Police

QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered qualified for this position, candidates must have the following:

1.  Employee must have a working knowledge of and skill to operate all required communications equipment and a working knowledge of the geography of Hopkinton and surrounding communities.

2. Employee must be able to think and act quickly while remaining calm and consistent during emergency conditions with the ability to speak clearly in a well-modulated manner.

3. Ability to receive, understand and follow oral and written communications correctly and accurately and attend to a multiple tasks in an accurate manner.

4. Ability to operate office equipment such as copier machine, computer, typewriter or other related equipment.

5. The incumbent will greet the public as they enter the station, answer questions, supply permit applications, schedule appointments or comply with any other such appropriate requests.   The ability to use proper English, both spelling and grammar is essential for this position.

6. Employee must be extremely detail oriented.

7. No prior work experience is required, but candidate must be in general good health, especially in reaction to stressful situations.  Applicant must be prepared to demonstrate possession of the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform this work.
