From the Desk of Mike Mansir

Due to the very active winter we had this year there is an above average amount of sand on the roads in town. Because of all the duties we must perform before the Boston Marathon only a small amount of sweeping is done fr om the end of March to race day. Most of this work is focused on the center of town and the Marathon course. Now that the Marathon is over we will be moving forward with the street sweeping program.

Back in 2004 a street sweeping plan was implemented. We divided the town into three sections. Each year we start and stop in a different section so that the same streets are not done first or last every year. This program has been very successful and has helped us sweep in a more organized and efficient manner while cutting back on the number of phone calls we receive fr om concerned residents.

To view the sweeping sections and sweeping order please visit here.

We have been receiving numerous phone calls since the beginning of April fr om residents wanting to know when their road would be swept. Please be patient and understand that we have approximately 125 miles of road in Hopkinton. When you consider that we have to sweep both sides of the road that makes it 250 miles and in many cases more than one pass is needed to pick up all of the sand with the sweeper adding additional mileage.

It will take the Highway Department approximately four months to sweep every road in town once. We will have the sweepers out every day we possibly can based on weather and manpower.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter.
